Browns OG Eric Steinbach will be placed on injured reserve, head coach Pat Shurmur announced on Tuesday.

Steinbach underwent back surgery after sustaining an injury in practice a few weeks ago. He was held out of the team's three preseason games and was hoping to avoid surgery, but the injury was too severe for Steinbach to heal on his own. Shurmur said the surgery, "went well."

Since signing with Cleveland in 2007, Steinbach has started 62 games with the club. He is likely to be replaced in the lineup by fifth-round rookie Jason Pinkston.

The Browns added more depth to their line to replace Steinbach on Tuesday when they were awarded Oneil Cousins off waivers from the Ravens.
