The Packers began whittling down their roster Sunday morning, announcing the releases of released third-year TE Spencer Havner, rookie OT Theo Sherman and third-year WR Brett Swain.

Havner played in 21 games with one start during his three seasons (2008-10) with Green Bay, catching seven passes for 112 yards (16.0 yards per catch) and four touchdowns in 2009.

Swain, a seventh-round choice of the Packers in 2008, played in 22 games with one start in 2009-10 and caught six passes for 72 yards (12.0 ypc.) last season.
Sherman signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent on July 28.

The way we see it

The releases of Havner and Swain attest to the considerable depth that there appears to be at the tight end and wideout positions, respectively. Both players had their moments in a Green Bay uniform, but youngsters such as TEs Ryan Taylor (seventh-round rookie) and D.J. Williams (fifth-round rookie) and WRs Randall Cobb (second-round rookie) and Chastin West (undrafted first-year pro) deemed them expendable.
