Panthers MLB Jon Beason underwent surgery on his left Achilles this week, the team announced.

According to the team's Twitter account, the procedure was done to "ease discomfort in his Achilles, but Coach Rivera still hopes he'll be ready for the opener."

Beason, a three-time Pro Bowler, has started all 64 games in his career. The Panthers gave him a five-year, $50 million deal on July 28 with $25 million guaranteed.

The team's defensive captain, Beason made a team-high 121 tackles last season in addition to two forced fumbles, a sack and interception.

The way we see it

The Panthers do have some depth at linebacker, and if Beason cannot go, Dan Connor would likely get the call, but it would still be a big loss to not have him in the middle of the defense.
