The Giants lost starting CB Terrell Thomas to a season-ending torn ACL in the final minute of the first half of the team's 41-13 preseason win over Chicago on Monday night.

Thomas was hurt as he was blitzing Bears QB Jay Cutler. He initially stumbled as he planted his right foot, according to the New York Daily News, and then he collided with teammate Jason Pierre-Paul, whose leg appeared to strike Thomas on the side. It wasn't initially known whether the stumble or the collision with Pierre-Paul caused the torn ACL.

Thomas had moved past former first-round draft pick Aaron Ross into the starting lineup and appeared to be headed for a big season. Now Ross will regain his starting role.

The Giants also had lost 2011 first-round pick Prince Amukamara after surgery on a broken foot that is expected to keep him out until at least September.

The way we see it

The loss of Thomas is a huge blow to a Giants defense that was hoping to bounce back strong after ranking only 17th in points allowed during 2010. The team's depth at corner will take a hit, especially if Amukamara isn't able to come back soon from his surgery.
