The 49ers are no longer in the market for a third-string quarterback after reaching an agreement on Wednesday with QB Josh McCown.

McCown played last season in the UFL, but has previously seen time with the Cardinals, Lions, Raiders and Panthers. He last played in the league in 2009, when he played in one game for Carolina. In his NFL career, he has made 31 starts, thrown 35 touchdowns and 40 interceptions.

San Francisco had initially thought about signing Daunte Culpepper, who also was in the UFL during the 2010 season, but instead opted for McCown. He is likely to be a backup to vet Alex Smith and rookie Colin Kapernick.

According to the Sacramento Bee, McCown is familiar with 49ers quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst, who was an assistant in Arizona and Carolina when McCown played there.
