Former Vikings and Lions QB Daunte Culpepper worked out with the 49ers on Monday, and he may be on the verge of joining the team, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reported.

Culpepper, 34, hasn't played in the NFL since 2009, yet he might be considered a steadying veteran presence for a team that has considerable uncertainty at the key QB spot. Seventh-year pro Alex Smith hasn't secured a starting job that appeared to be his to lose during the offseason. After Smith's shaky performance in the Niners' preseason-opening 24-3 loss to New Orleans, second-round pick Colin Kaepernick is suddenly in the mix, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.

After spending most of his career in Minnesota, Culpepper played in eight games for Detroit in '09, starting five.
