Bears DE Corey Wootton, who was injured in the team's preseason opener on Saturday evening, could miss up to four weeks due to meniscus damage in his right knee, according to the Chicago Tribune's Vaughn McClure.

Wootton was injured on the opening kickoff of Chicago's 10-3 win over the Bills. He was hit in the side during a block and, according to McClure, appeared to plant his foot incorrectly, leading to the knee injury.

A second-year pro from Minnesota, Wootton was expected to have a larger role on the defense this season. As a rookie he registered only one sack, though it was quite memorable — a Monday-night takedown of Brett Favre that forced the Vikings QB out of the game.

He is likely to miss the remainder of the preseason but could be ready for Week One.

The way we see it

The Bears are looking to mix some young defensive ends in with vets Julius Peppers and Israel Idonije. Wootton could lose some playing time due to this injury, especially if players such as Vernon Gholston thrive during his time away from the field.
