Grossman looks to steal Redskins' QB starting job

It was only one preseason game, and a week ago it was presumed that John Beck would be the Redskins' Week One starter, but QB Rex Grossman is doing his best to steal the job as Beck's injured groin heals. Grossman looked sharp in the exhibition opener, leading the Redskins to 259 total yards in one half of work (the seven points they scored can be blamed on two missed FG attempts). Most of all, though, Grossman played under control and within himself, not forcing the action against a steely, veteran defense. That's what the Redskins need and demand most from their quarterbacks: smart, sound play with the system generating the big-play opportunities, as opposed to the triggerman creating those plays by himself. Grossman also had a successful series in a two-minute situation, something that had to please Mike Shanahan especially, considering he claimed it was the original reason he benched Donovan McNabb in favor of Grossman last season.
