Since the offseason, we knew the main training-camp battle to watch in Miami would be at free safety, between Chris Clemons and Reshad Jones. The way we hear it, Clemons still has the upper hand, and he got the start in the Dolphins' first preseason game. If the coaching staff could combine the two players, it would have the perfect free safety. Jones is a playmaker, as shown in his opportunity against Tennessee last season when he had a sack and an interception. But Clemons is better at always being in position, and the Dolphins can't afford for their free safety to be out of position, even if Clemons struggled to make plays — he dropped three interceptions last season, according to Football Outsiders. Jones will get his opportunities, and head coach Tony Sparano said he has shown flashes in camp, but we hear that until Jones improves his football IQ, Clemons will continue to man center field in Miami.
