DT Corvey Irvin is earning rave reviews at Panthers training camp and has positioned himself as the front-runner to start at three-technique. He arrived at camp in better shape than in previous years and looks much less soft, according to one observer. Carolina drafted Irvin in the third round in 2009, but his rookie season was basically a redshirt year, as he spent it on injured reserve. He was cut after camp in '10 but was added to the practice squad and played in two games late last season. There will be a rotation at three-technique with rookie third-round pick Terrell McClain likely to get a decent share of snaps. The Panthers will be relying on a young group of D-tackles, as rookie Sione Fua, also a third-round pick, is expected to start at nose tackle following the season-ending torn triceps suffered by free-agent addition Ron Edwards. It has been awhile since the Panthers were this excited about their young talent at the position.
