Dominique Franks is coming on strong at Falcons training camp and is making a strong push to beat Chris Owens in the nickel back competition. Franks, a fifth-round pick in 2010, doesn't have much experience — he has appeared in only two games — but he's bigger than Owens and has a very physical playing style, which works in his favor. The coaching staff has worked with Franks to help him break some bad technique habits he entered the league with, and it appears he has made strides in that area. While Owens has more experience, including nine starts in two NFL seasons, under his belt, we hear the team would be happy to see Franks continue to be assertive and earn the job. Owens had a bad showing in Atlanta's playoff loss to Green Bay last season, but head coach Mike Smith expressed confidence in Owens this offseason. It looks like Owens will have a secure hold on a roster spot even if Franks becomes the nickel corner.
