Colts head coach Jim Caldwell revealed Monday that recently signed OLB Ernie Sims had an appendectomy Sunday night and will be out for a couple weeks while he recovers.
Sims, a five-year NFL veteran, signed a one-year contract with Indianapolis last week after spending the 2010 season with the Eagles. The 26-year-old was a first-round pick by the Lions in 2006. He collected more than 100 tackles in each of his first three seasons with Detroit.
Sims is competing for the starting job at weak-side linebacker. That position opened up when Clint Session, the 2010 starter, signed with the division-rival Jaguars.
