S Bernard Pollard signed a two-year contract with Baltimore on Thursday, it was announced by Ravens executive vice president/general manager Ozzie Newsome.
Pollard, 26, notched 111 tackles in 15 games (all starts) for Houston last season. The Texans elected not to re-sign the unrestricted free agent, who played the past two seasons in Houston after playing his first three NFL seasons in Kansas City.
The Ravens' starting strong safety in 2010, Dawan Landry, signed with Jacksonville. Tom Zbikowski, a strong candidate to replace Landry in the starting lineup, was placed on the non-football illness list on July 31. He reportedly has a skin condition, but the Carroll County (Md.) Times has reported the condition is not regarded as contagious.
The Way We See It
Pollard's addition bolsters the Ravens' safety depth. He is best playing near the line of scrimmage. Pollard played better in 2009, when his addition helped the Texans' defense show marked improvement, than last season, when the entire secondary really struggled in coverage.
