In an attempt to bolster their passing game with another downfield threat, the 49ers have signed free agent WR Braylon Edwards. The deal is for one year and worth $3.5 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Edwards himself confirmed the news via Twitter, writing "We have moved to the bay. I'm a proud member of the San Francisco 49ers"

The former Browns and Jets wideout is a big target (6-foot-3) who should aid the Niners' passing game and quarterback tremendously. However, consistency has been an issue for Edwards, as have off the field issues. He recently plead guilty to a DWI charge and was involved in a fight outside a bar in Michigan.

The Cardinals also had shown interest in signing Edwards.

The way we see it

With Michael Crabtree already injured in camp, there was a great need for the 49ers to bring in a big-play wide receiver, and that's exactly what Edwards is. His one-year deal indicates the team was not interested in committing too much to him, as his history of legal trouble and potential suspension are a cause for concern.
