Former NFL DE Bubba Smith, who after retirement became a Hollywood actor, died on Wednesday at age 66, multiple media outlets reported.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the L.A. County coroner's office has not revealed the cause of Smith's death, but officials believe he died of natural causes.

Smith played nine seasons in the NFL as a defensive end after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 1967 draft out of Michigan State. Much of his career was spent with the Baltimore Colts, but he also suited up for the Raiders and Houston Oilers before retirement. Twice (1970 and '71) Smith was named to the Pro Bowl.

Upon retirement in '76, Smith became an actor. He was well-known for his role as Sgt. Moses Hightower in the "Police Academy" series.
