The Saints pulled a stunner, agreeing to a contract with one of the best free agents available, former 49ers DT Aubrayo Franklin, according to multiple reports.
The ninth-year veteran started all 16 games each of the last two seasons. He recorded 39 tackles and one pass defensed last year.
Franklin was PFW's 20th-best free agent this offseason. The Saints have been working to upgrade their defensive line. They picked two defensive ends in the draft, including their first pick, Cameron Jordan. The Saints lost DT Remi Ayodele via free agency.
New Orleans also re-signed TE David Thomas, according to CBS Sports' Larry Holder.
The way we see it
Adding Franklin to the D-line gives the Saints a formidable interior, paired with Shaun Rogers and Sedrick Ellis. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams can get very creative with the personnel groupings he uses on the defensive line and he has more depth to work with thanks to the addition of Franklin.
The team likes Thomas as Jimmy Graham's backup, and that is not a surprise re-signing.
