Jets ILB David Harris has signed a long-term contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.
Harris received the franchise tag before the lockout, but the team was committed to signing him to a long-term contract. The four-year deal is reportedly worth $36 million with $29.5 million — the most guaranteed money for an inside linebacker in NFL hsitory.
The fifth-year veteran has started all 16 games each of the last two seasons. He recorded 99 tackles, three sacks and three passes defensed in 2010.
The way we see it
Heading into the lockout, the Jets had a few options for their franchise tag, including CB Antonio Cromartie and WR Santonio Holmes, but they went with Harris, a guy with strong instincts who is a key cog in one of the league's best run defenses.
The move also should help free up salary-cap space for the team that entered this offseason over the cap with big moves to make in re-signing Holmes and Cromartie and bringing in Plaxico Burress.
