The Colts announced Tuesday that they have signed their first-round draft choice (22nd overall) OT Anthony Castonzo. The team also signed LB Ernie Sims and DE Jamaal Anderson and placed LB Darry Beckwith on waivers.

"Thanks to the Colts organization we were able to get this done," Castonzo said. "Now I am excited to get into camp and get to work with my teammates. I know there is a lot for me to learn and I am going to do whatever I can to get on the field."

The 6-7, 305-pound Castonzo holds the record for most career starts at Boston College (54) and was an Associated Press third-team All-American.

Sims, a five-year NFL veteran, spent four seasons with the Lions (2006-09) before playing the 2010 campaign with the Eagles. In 74 career contests, he has totaled 475 tackles (329 solo), 4½ sacks, one interception, 10 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Anderson, the eighth overall selection by the Falcons in the 2007 draft, started 47-of-60 contests in four seasons in Atlanta, totaling 4½ sacks, nine passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

The way we see it

Signing Castonzo was the easy part. Now the Colts face the tall order of getting their rookie up to speed in time to protect QB Peyton Manning's blind side in Week One. With no offseason work, Castonzo will have to be a very fast learner of the Colts' complex offensive playbook.

Sims, a run-and-hit 'backer who fits the Colts' Tampa-2 scheme well, will likely compete with second-year LB Kavell Conner to fill the void left by the departure of former starter Clint Session to Jacksonville.

Anderson joins the Colts after four disappointing seasons in Atlanta. He will be expected to provide depth behind Pro Bowlers Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.
