Safety first. Beginning what turned out to be a frenzied influx of new personnel via free agency, the Rams wasted no time setting their sights on nine-year veteran Quintin Mikell, a full-time starter with the Eagles the past four seasons, to shore up a safety position that had been weakened by the departure of O.J. Atogwe. "He was their top target," said one team insider of Mikell, a Pro Bowler in 2009 who led the Eagles in tackles last season (88) while matching his career high with three interceptions. "The reason they moved so fast on him was that they thought once (Eric) Weddle was re-signed (by San Diego), there would be a rush of interest in Mikell as the second-best safety available." Although he seems a bit undersized, word is Mikell will start at strong safety, with Craig Dahl starting at free safety. "But in the Rams' system, the safeties are really interchangeable," the insider said.
