Predictably, Gore holdout does not last long

Our Niners sources weren't about to get up in arms when RB Frank Gore made it known just before the opening of training camp that he was planning on staging a contract holdout.  "I don't see him holding out too long," said one team insider. "He just loves the game too much." Our source apparently was right on the money, as head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed Sunday evening (July 31) that Gore would be ending his brief hiatus. But with Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams re-upping to the tune of $43 million (including $21 million guaranteed), we hear Gore — who is being paid $4.9 million (counting bonuses) entering the final year of his contract — still believes the time is right for a sizable raise. "I think he sees the team giving (QB) Alex Smith $5 million for one year and has to be thinking, 'They want me to be the centerpiece, and I'm making less than Alex Smith?' " the insider said.

Harbaugh, who has earned strong early reviews for being a straight shooter with his players, is apparently sensitive to Gore's contract wishes, telling CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco, "We'll earnestly look at that in terms of extending him."
