The Cowboys and DE Marcus Spears agreed to a 5-year, $19.2 million deal on Friday, keeping the run-stuffing defender in the lineup for the near future. ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the signing.

Spears is not much of a pass rusher, registering only eight sacks in 88 career games. But he is consistent, and good left ends for a 3-4 defense are tough to find. The team is comfortable with his skill set, locking him up long-term for new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

The way we see it

Dallas is still considered a potential landing spot for CB Nnamdi Asomugha, though clearly the team felt they couldn't afford to sit around on their cap space waiting for the corner to sign. Spears was never really rumored to sign elsewhere, so locking him up for a fair price was a move Jerry Jones and Co. felt they could do while still trying to land Asomugha.
