The Browns will release QB Jake Delhomme, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wednesday afternoon.

According to The Plain Dealer, Delhomme was slated to make $5.4 million in 2011. Delhomme, 36, was signed to a two-year contract last offseason to be Cleveland's starter. However, he suffered a high ankle sprain in the season opener at Tampa Bay, was hurt again in a loss to Atlanta, and started just four games. By season's end, Colt McCoy had emerged as Cleveland's clear-cut starter.

Turnovers, as they were in his final games in Carolina, were a problem for Delhomme in 2011. He threw seven interceptions and lost a fumble in his five games for the Browns. Overall, he completed 93-of-149 passes for 872 yards with two TDs.

The way we see it

The Browns' re-signing of QB Seneca Wallace before the lockout signaled Delhomme might no longer fit in Cleveland's plans. Delhomme figures to draw interest from clubs looking for a veteran backup; his days as a viable full-time veteran starter may well be over.

McCoy and Wallace are secure as the Browns' top two quarterbacks, with an undrafted rookie or a veteran free agent signing potentially filling the third spot. The Browns reportedly have agreed on a deal with undrafted free agent Troy Weatherhead, who played for Hillsdale College and has been playing for the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League. The Browns also have former West Virginia QB Jarrett Brown on the roster.
