A day after releasing some key offensive linemen, the Giants added to the unit by signing former 49ers C David Baas on Wednesday morning. The news was first reported by Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

It had been expected that Baas would re-sign with the Niners after playing in 92 games for the team over the past six years. Instead he chose to head to New York, where the converted guard will take over for Shaun O'Hara, who was informed of his release on Tuesday.

Baas is a strong and athletic center who should step right in and anchor the Giants' line from his first practice.

The way we see it

Eli Manning must have placed a panicked call to GM Jerry Reese when three-fifths of his offensive line was razed in a single day, but the Giants have a plan in place. O'Hara and Rich Seubert now are unlikely to return, though don't shut the door on Shawn Andrews, who showed some good things while fighting through injuries last season. Baas is almost certain to be the starting center, as they are far more difficult to find than guards.
