A day after re-signing DE Charles Johnson, the Panthers made their defensive line even tougher by agreeing to a deal with DT Ron Edwards on Wednesday morning.

Edwards, who played the past five seasons for the Chiefs, will ink a three-year deal with Carolina on Friday when signing are allowed. The news was first reported by the Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher.

The tackle should bolster the Panthers' front four, as he is a strong run defender who is skilled at taking on blockers. It had been expected the Chiefs would push strongly to re-sign Edwards, and now they have a major need at nose tackle.

Last season, Edwards recorded 26 tackles and two sacks.

The way we see it

Defensive tackle was a major weakness for the Panthers, and they've addressed it this offseason by spending two third-round picks (Terrell McClain and Sione Fua) on the position and bringing the 32-year-old Edwards into the fold.

There are no superstars in that group, but Edwards will help bolster a run defense that ranked 23rd in the league last season. He hasn't missed a game since the 2005 season and should be an upgrade.
