Vikings to release DT Kennedy

The Vikings will beging the process of trying to get under the salary cap by releasing DT Jimmy Kennedy.

Doing so will save the team $2.5 million. Kennedy, 31, was a scant contributor last season, making eight tackles and half a sack in nine games.

They now find themselves $2.3 million over the roughly $120 million salary cap, and more cuts appear to be coming.

WR Bernard Berrian, whose production has fallen off the past two seasons, could be gone, which would save the team more than $4 million toward the cap.

The Vikings appear to want to be active in free agency, courting free-agent S Eric Weddle and making overtures to have NT Pat Williams, who turns 39 in October, return.

The way we see it

Kennedy was too expensive as a backup, and even with DT Kevin Williams perhaps missing the first four games to suspension, the Vikings can plug in rookie Christian Ballard at that position if needed.
