The 49ers and QB Alex Smith agreed on a one-year deal worth $5 million, ESPN's John Clayton reported.

Smith, a former No. 1 overall pick, was an unrestricted free agent. The signing will be official on Friday. The 49ers drafted Colin Kaepernick in the second round of April's draft.

Smith threw 14 TDs and 10 interceptionss last season in 10 starts.

The way we see it

Re-signing Smith is not a surprise, as new head coach Jim Harbaugh has said that he wants Smith in San Francisco. Smith's presence will keep the Niners from having to speed up the development of Kaepernick.
