With NFL teams able to communicate with their players again, the Ravens wasted no time informing some high-priced veterans that they are not part of their plans for the 2011 season.

The team contacted RB Willis McGahee, NT Kelly Gregg, TE Todd Heap and WR Derrick Mason to tell them that they will have their contracts terminated on July 28, when teams are allowed to start making cuts, PFW correspondent Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun reported Monday. Those moves clear $18.6 million in salary, according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times. Hensley wrote on Twitter that it's possible Gregg will be re-signed at a lower cost.

Players must pass physicals before they can be released. The NFL announced on Monday that teams could open their facilities starting Tuesday to allow players to work out and meet with trainers.

The way we see it

All four players were key members of Baltimore's recent playoff teams, but all are past their prime. At least a couple of them could be re-signed, but they'll have to take signficant pay cuts to return.
