NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced Thursday that the 2011 Hall of Fame game has been canceled.

The Bears and Rams were to play in the game August 7 in Canton, Ohio, but the commissioner said that there was not enough time for the teams to prepare for the game. Goodell also said that the owners wanted to make sure that all 32 teams were able to play the same number of preseason games. The Rams and Bears would have played five games, but instead all 32 teams will play four.

Bears president and CEO Ted Philips issued a statement on the game being canceled.

"It was cancelled because of the delay in opening camp. We were supposed to open camp on July 23," Philips said. "Obviously that's not going to be the case any longer, so it made it difficult to prepare for that game. Because we have Richard Dent being enshrined, it's disappointing from that standpoint but probably the most fair given the circumstances of the offseason that every team starts training camp on the same day."

The Hall of Fame's enshrinement ceremony will still take place on August 6.
