A woman charged with trying to extort money from Titans WR Damian Williams was arrested on Monday. The news was first reported by PFW correspondent Jim Wyatt, a beat writer for The Tennessean.
Shelley Anne David was charged with one count of extortion and was being held on bond. A police spokesperson said the 22-year-old woman attempted to extort $5,000 from Williams.
David filed a domestic assault complaint against Williams earlier this month, but she was arrested following a meeting with Williams on Monday after she allegedly received a $5,000 cashier's check from him in exchange for a note saying she would not appear in court against him. Undercover police monitored the meeting.
"Damian Williams, in the presence of detectives, placed a phone call to Shelley David this morning and arranged for a meeting," police spokesman Don Aaron said, according to The Tennessean. "David received a $5,000 cashier's check from Williams and gave him a signed note saying she would not appear in any court proceedings against him. At that point she was taken into custody."
The District Attorney's office cancelled the assault warrant for Williams on Monday, citing David's credibility issues.
Williams, a third-round pick by the Titans in 2010, had 16 receptions for 219 yards in his rookie season.
