Mikell could be out on Eagles' defense

Top pick Danny Watkins might not be the only rookie who is in line for a starting position right away. Second-round S Jaiquawn Jarrett might have a great chance of starting if the team parts ways with Quintin Mikell, a free agent regardless of the post-lockout rules. Like Mikell, Jarrett is known best for his hitting and less for his coverage skills and could be a solid player in the box — and a cheaper option — lining up next to Nate Allen. As a rookie, Allen showed that he could contribute right away; save for a rough game at Tennessee, he proved to be quite capable before suffering a season-ending injury. What should make things easier for Jarrett and the rest of the young defensive players is that new coordinator Juan Castillo wants to simplify the scheme. In a lockout-shortened offseason and coming off a campaign in which some Eagles whispered that former coordinator Sean McDermott's scheme was too complex, it's a change that could help many.
