Giants have immediate plans for DT Austin

The handwriting is on the wall with DT Barry Cofield, an underrated performer the past two seasons who has sent every signal possible that he wants to test the free-agent market and cash in. The Giants have planned well in advance for this possibility, drafting defensive tackles in the second round of each of the past two drafts. First came Linval Joseph last year, followed by Marvin Austin this year. Joseph proved to be a work in progress last season in what was essentially a redshirt season. But Joseph could be thrust into action right away, with or without Cofield on the roster. Austin has a nasty streak and might have been a first-round pick had he not missed his entire senior season. Teams also were concerned with Austin's character, but the Giants say it is not an issue with them. They believe he can be an active and dangerous interior rusher — just like Cofield (10½ career sacks) has been.
