Could QB John Beck be the Redskins' Week One starter? We told you back in December that head coach Mike Shanahan was sending strong signals that Beck was someone who could compete for the job, but at the time it rang more as a knock against beleaguered QB Donovan McNabb, who almost certainly will be traded or released as soon as player movement is permitted. But the Redskins not drafting a quarterback was a strong hint that Beck is at least strongly in the mix to start with Rex Grossman scheduled to hit free agency. Grossman could return, and another veteran could be signed as part of the QB derby. But it would not shock our observers if the mobile, smart Beck — who is the same age as Clinton Portis — ends up as the starter. Shanahan is said to like how quickly Beck picked up the offense, far more so than McNabb did, which led to McNabb's ouster as the starter.
