Fantasy outlook: RB Shane Vereen

California's Shane Vereen gets the first shot to be a member of Bill Belichick's split backfield in New England, which automatically diminishes his fantasy value.

You knew the Patriots were going to add a back, and they added two on Friday with Vereen and Stevan Ridley. Vereen should be able to give BenJarvus Green-Ellis a spell, as last year's 1,000-yard runner is not an every-down back. Vereen is strong and an effective receiver, which could allow him some opportunities on third down.

Since Green-Ellis isn't a receiving option, Vereen gives Tom Brady another back outside Danny Woodhead to get involved in the passing game, and that could make him a guy to keep an eye on in PPR leagues.

It's always risky to draft any skill player on the Patriots considering how they distribute the football, and with Green-Ellis' red-zone skills, Vereen won't get many touches near the goal line.
