One of the most surprising picks of the draft was QB Ryan Mallett heading to New England, and he won't have any fantasy value for a couple years.
Mallett will come to Foxborough as the Patriots' No. 3 quarterback and will compete with Brian Hoyer to be Tom Brady's backup. Mallett has the athletic tools and a cannon for an arm, but character concerns dropped him to the third round.
His only opportunity to make a fantasy impact in 2011 is in every Patriots fan's nightmare scenario — an injury to Tom Brady, and that's only if Mallett is ready to handle the team's intricate offense, an offense that Hoyer already knows.
If Mallett does get a chance, he has plenty of weapons to work with. For now, Mallett doesn't have any value as a fantasy player, but if Bill Belichick was right about him, he could be a solid fantasy QB in a few years.
