Former 49ers RB Joe "The Jet" Perry has passed away at the age of 84, it was reported by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Niners on Monday.

The team released a statement on its Twitter page that said, "The 49ers send out their sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Niners great Joe "The Jet" Perry who passed today. He was 84."

Known for his speed, Perry became the first running back to rush for more than 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons, doing so in 1953 (1,018 yards in 12 games) and ’54 (1,049 yards in 12 games).

He spent 16 seasons in the NFL from 1948-62, 14 with the 49ers (1948-60, '63) and two with the Colts (1961-62). Perry piled up 12,532 net yards in his career, 9,723 of which came on the ground. He gained 5.0 yards per carry.

The three-time Pro Bowler scored 513 points (including 71 rushing TDs) and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969.
