Overview: A couple promising players have been taken with the No. 17 pick the past two years in Niners OG Mike Iupati and Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman. In looking at the selections made at this spot the past 10 years, PFW found that for the most part, the 17th pick, which is held by the Patriots this year, has been hit or miss:

2010: 49ers select Idaho OG Mike Iupati
The 49ers ran behind Iupati as much as possible last season, and for good reason. The 6-5, 331-pounder figures to be a long-term fixture in San Francisco after starting all 16 contests as a rookie.

2009: Buccaneers select Kansas State QB Josh Freeman
Freeman is a big, well-built quarterback who figures to have a long future in Tampa Bay. He is coming off a season in which he threw 25 touchdown passes and six interceptions, and is maturing into being a team leader for the young, rising Bucs.

2008: Lions select Boston College OT Gosder Cherilus
Cherilus was starting to turn into an effective tackle for the Lions in 2010 before his season came to an end with a knee injury. He has been a regular starter at right tackle for the past three seasons and likely will get another chance to keep his starting spot.

2007: Broncos select Florida DE Jarvis Moss
Moss never worked out in Denver. He spent 3½ seasons with the Broncos from 2007-10 and made only one start. He was cut by Denver last November and signed with division-rival Oakland a week later. He played in five games with the Raiders, making three tackles.

2006: Vikings select Iowa LB Chad Greenway
Greenway has come to be known as an above-average linebacker who excels in zone coverage. He recorded 144 tackles last season, making at least six tackles in all 16 contests. The team gave him the franchise tag over WR Sidney Rice, which shows how valuable he is to Minnesota.

2005: Bengals select Georgia LB David Pollack
Pollack had a decent rookie season, playing in 14 games and racking up 4½ sacks. He suffered an unfortunate neck injury the following year that forced him to retire early.

2004: Broncos select Miami (Fla.) OLB D.J. Williams
A pair of DUI arrests have hurt Williams' image, but he has been a solid producer throughout his career. Williams led the Broncos in both tackles (119) and sacks (5½) in 2010 and also defended nine passes.

2003: Cardinals select Penn State WR Bryant Johnson
Johnson hasn't ever been anything more than a No. 3 receiver, but he has filled his role well. First with Arizona, then San Francisco and now Detroit, Johnson has piled up 3,848 receiving yards throughout his career, finding the endzone 15 times.

2002: Raiders select Miami (Fla.) CB Phillip Buchanon
Buchanon, who is currently with the Redskins, is now on his fifth NFL team. He spent three seasons in Oakland where he compiled 11 of his 20 career interceptions. He continues to be a productive situational defensive back.

2001: Seahawks select Michigan OG Steve Hutchinson
The Seahawks had one of the best guards in the league in Hutchinson but they let him sign a lucrative deal with Minnesota, where he continues to play extremely well. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler and a five-time first-team All-Pro selection.
