Overview: The 18th pick has been a mixed bag for NFL teams. Recently some solid players have been taken in the spot, including a couple strong pass rushers and one of the league's best young quarterbacks. There also have been a few busts taken at the No. 18 overall spot, which is held this year by the Chargers.
2010: Steelers select Florida C Maurkice Pouncey
Pouncey immediately became the Steelers' best offensive lineman last season. He received two votes for Offensive Rookie of the Year, a rare honor for an offensive lineman, and looks to have the skills of a perennial Pro Bowler.
2009: Broncos select Tennessee LB Robert Ayers
After playing end in college, Ayers was forced into a LB role in the Broncos' 3-4 defense. With John Fox taking over in Denver, Ayers is expected to see an added boost in production after returning to his natural DE position.
2008: Ravens select Delaware QB Joe Flacco
Flacco has proven to be a great pick for the Ravens. He has improved every year since coming into the league and is the type of strong-armed pocket passer every team is looking for. He hasn't missed a start in three seasons and has won a road playoff game every season.
2007: Bengals select Michigan CB Leon Hall
Hall has been an above-average corner for the Bengals. While he doesn't amaze anybody with his skills, he has never missed a game in four seasons and always seems to be around the ball. Hall has 18 interceptions in his career.
2006: Cowboys select Ohio State LB Bobby Carpenter
The Cowboys were never able to find a spot for Carpenter. He stayed in Dallas for four seasons, making three starts, but was never much of a factor. He continues to float around the league and is now with the Lions.
2005: Vikings select Wisconsin DE Erasmus James
Things went downhill for James after a solid rookie year. He missed most of the '06 season with a torn ACL and eventually ran into substance-abuse problems. He spent just four seasons in the NFL.
2004: Saints select Ohio State DE Will Smith
Smith is considered one of the best defensive ends in the NFC. He is a balanced player who has the ability to contribute in all aspects of the game. Smith has 55 sacks in seven seasons, all with New Orleans.
2003: Cardinals select Wake Forest DE Calvin Pace
Pace played well in his five seasons in Arizona but has really come into his own since signing with the Jets in '08. He has racked up 20½ sacks and nine forced fumbles in three seasons and has become a vital part of the defense.
2002: Falcons select Michigan State RB T.J. Duckett
Duckett didn't turn into a premier back in the NFL, never living up to his first-round status. His best year came in '03, when he rushed for 779 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.
2001: Lions select Michigan OT Jeff Backus
Backus has been an extremely dependable player for the Lions. He has started 160 consecutive games since coming into the league and is considered a blue-collar, workmanlike tackle.
