Daron Roberts, who had been the Lions' assistant secondary coach, has left the team to take a coaching position at the University of West Virginia, according to ESPN.

Roberts will be the special-teams coordinator and inside receivers coach for the Mountaineers after spending the past two seasons in Detroit as a defensive assistant under coordinator Gunther Cunningham. He also previously worked with the Chiefs with Cunningham as a defensive quality-control assistant.

The way we see it

This is very unusual timing for a coaching move, as Roberts presumably was knee deep in draft preparations for the Lions. Head coach Jim Schwartz now will have to find a quick replacement or have a vacancy on his staff until the draft is over.
