Former NFL head coach Buddy Ryan, the father of current NFL coaches Rex and Rob Ryan, has cancer, according to the New York Daily News. Rex Ryan, the head coach of the Jets, told the paper of this news in an interview on Tuesday.

"It's going to take more than this to get rid of him," Rex Ryan said to the newspaper. "That's what he always says."

Though the type of cancer was not revealed, Buddy Ryan has been diagnosed previously with melanoma, which is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. Rex Ryan said that the cancer this time is not melanoma.

"He's 80 years old, but he's doing great. He's tougher than (s---)," Ryan said of his father, who is actually 77. "He's had other things in his life. He overcame encephalitis. He's overcome cancer twice. He's tough."

Buddy Ryan was an NFL coach for 27 years, both as a defensive assistant with the Jets, Vikings, Bears and Oilers and as a head coach of the Eagles and Cardinals. He is known as the creator of the "46" defense, which helped guide the 1985 Bears, considered by some to be the greatest defensive unit in league history, to a Super Bowl title.
