Whenever free agency begins, a main focus of the Jets will be on special teams. With KR Brad Smith, PK Nick Folk and P Steve Weatherford all without contracts, along with Lance Laury, James Ihedigbo and Eric Smith — who along with Brad Smith were the top four, respectively, on the team in special-teams tackles — the unit has a lot of needs to address. Special-teams coordinator Mike Westhoff told reporters, "We'd like to keep as many as possible," following a speech at a substance-abuse rehab center for adolescents in New Jersey on March 15, but it remains to be seen if that is possible. In an interview with PFW in late-February, Weatherford said he was hopeful that he'd be back in green and white in 2011. "I really enjoyed my time in New York and I'd really like to stay there and play for coach (Rex) Ryan another couple of years and finish my career there." With an unknown salary cap, other big-name free agents and a plethora of draft picks, it's unlikely the entire unit will return intact.
