The Steelers have hired Carnell Lake as their new defensive backs coach after he interviewed for the position last week.

Lake spent 10 years with the team as a player from 1989-98, recording six interceptions, 17 fumble recoveries, 25 sacks and five defensive touchdowns in his Steelers career; he made the Pro Bowl in four of those seasons, then for the fifth time in 1999 while with the Jaguars. Playing every position in the defensive backfield over the course of his career, Lake was consistently one of the NFL's top defenders in the 1990s and was named to the All-Decade team.

In 2009, Lake was the defensive backs coach at UCLA, his alma mater, before stepping down after one season due to family reasons. He takes over on the Steelers staff for Ray Horton, who left to become the defensive coordinator with the Cardinals.

The way we see it

Lake has great knowledge of Dick LeBeau's defensive scheme from his time playing under the coach, so he should fit right in on the staff. He will be a great asset to what is already one of the league's top defenses.
