The Jets have had only seven draft picks the past two years combined, by far the lowest total in the league. Of those seven picks, six have been offensive players, headlined by QB Mark Sanchez and RB Shonn Greene in 2009. That trend should change in 2011, as the team will focus on restocking the defense with young talent. New York doesn't have a second-round pick due to its trade last year for CB Antonio Cromartie, but expect GM Mike Tannenbaum and head coach Rex Ryan to look closely at the defensive front seven early in the draft. Ryan, a defensive-minded coach, told reporters that he always will opt for a player on that side of the ball if possible, a philosophy he picked up during his time as an assistant coach for the Ravens. The biggest needs are at outside linebacker and nose tackle, as the team would like to replace the recently released Jason Taylor, Vernon Gholston and Kris Jenkins.
