The Bears have restructured the contract of DE Julius Peppers, creating more cap space for the team next season, according to multiple reports Thursday.

The team exercised an option in the six-year, $91.5 million contract that Peppers signed with Chicago last offseason, enabling it to convert a $10.5 million roster bonus that was due next season to a signing bonus that could be prorated over the remaining five years of the contract. The restructuring was first reported by ESPNChicago.com and later confirmed by The Associated Press.

The move will save the Bears $8.4 million in cap space next season.

Peppers' play in his first season in Chicago helped propel the Bears to an 11-5 record and an NFC North title.
