Veteran TE Jeremy Shockey will sign with the Panthers, he announced on his Twitter account Thursday.

"Looks like I'm signing with Carolina. Time for next chapter. This is a great opportunity for me, and I am excited to play football. Let's hope we all have the chance to play this season," he wrote.

The Saints cut Shockey last week instead of paying him a reported $4.2 million in 2011, the final year of his deal. Shockey also reportedly had a workout with the Dolphins. He had a career-low 408 receiving yards in 2010.

Shockey will be reunited with Rob Chudzinski, the Panthers' offensive coordinator who was with the University of Miami when Shockey starred there.

The way we see it

Chudzinski was probably a big factor in Shockey's decision, and the Panthers could use an upgrade at tight end. If the contract is not finalized by the end of the day, Shockey would have had to wait for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement to be agreed upon to sign with the team. It will be interesting to see how Shockey manages to do on a Panthers offense with many holes, and his quarterback will possibly be Jimmy Clausen.
