With only two days remaining before NFL owners are expected to lock out the players, Raiders OLB Kamerion Wimbley will sign his franchise tender after negotiations for a long-term contract were futile. His agent, Joe Linta, confirmed a Fox Sports report Monday that Wimbley will sign the one-year deal, which will guarantee him $11,312,000 next season.

Wimbley had nine sacks and a forced fumble in 2010, his first year in Oakland. Both sides had hoped to work out a longer extension before the Collective Bargaining Agreement expired but were unable to do so.

The Raiders have been quite busy the last week, signing five of their own potential free agents — CB Stanford Routt, DTs Richard Seymour and John Henderson, RB Rock Cartwright and Wimbley — to new deals. None of the deals included signing bonuses that need to be paid before games are played, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The way we see it

Wimbley is a solid player, but he is not one of the five best linebackers in the league, despite being paid as such. The Raiders were able to reach a new deal with Seymour, which was very important, but chose to give Wimbley the franchise tag instead of TE Zach Miller. Oakland has lacked defensive difference makers in recent years, likely the reason they felt keeping Wimbley was so crucial.
