The Eagles made a commitment to improve their defense this offseason, starting with changing coordinators to Juan Castillo. On Sunday, the team added another piece to the unit it hopes will be much better in 2011.
LB Rashad Jeanty was signed to a one-year contract by the team as a versatile backup who can also contribute on special teams. Jeanty played in 53 combined games from through '09 with the Bengals but missed all of last season due to a fractured left tibia and ankle, which happened in Cincinnati's wild-card round loss to the Jets following the '09 season. He has 214 career tackles with five fumbles forced.
The way we see it
Obviously this move alone won't transform the Eagles into the league's best defense. But players like Jeanty — who can play multiple LB spots and make tackles on coverage teams — are valuable, because as the Packers showed last season, a team never knows when a backup is going to have to step up and make important contributions.
