The Steelers announced Friday that they have placed the franchise tag on LOLB LaMarr Woodley.

Woodley said during Super Bowl week that he fully expected to get the tag and it had been reported earlier this week that he would be getting it. He is expected to be paid more than $10 million for 2011.

Like the other players that have been franchised, the Steelers gave Woodley the designation so the two sides could work toward a long-term deal.

Woodley has spent all four seasons in Pittsburgh since being drafted by the Steelers in the second round in 2007. He has had three consecutive seasons of double-digit sacks, including 10 in 2010. He has 39 sacks in his career.

The way we see it

Woodley, 26, is the latest star outside linebacker to emerge in the club's 3-4 defense. While his pass-rush ability is well-known, he is also a very good run defender. With Woodley rushing off the left side and Pro Bowler James Harrison a standout at right outside linebacker, the Steelers have an enviable tandem at one of the most important positions in their scheme.
