The Raiders traded their 2011 first-round draft pick to the Patriots in September 2009 in order to acquire DT Richard Seymour. On Wednesday, Oakland made sure the acquisition would not be a fleeting one.

Seymour reportedly has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the team, keeping the talented defensive lineman off the free-agent market. Playing in 13 games last season, Seymour recorded 48 tackles and 5½ sacks, helping the Raiders rank 11th in the league in defense in 2010. The amount of the contract is unknown at this time.

By reaching an extension with Seymour, it allows the team to use the franchise tag on TE Zach Miller, something the Raiders are expected to do soon. Miller had a productive season in ’10, leading the team in receptions (60), receiving yards (685) and TD catches (five).

The way we see it

These two moves allow the Raiders to focus much of their offseason attention on CB Nnamdi Asomugha, who was not eligible for the franchise tag. Seymour, 31, still is a productive player and based on what the team dealt to acquire him (the 17th pick in this year's draft), it was important that he was retained.
