The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on OLB Tamba Hali on Wednesday, keeping the talented defender in Kansas City.

Hali had a breakout season in 2010, his fifth year in the league, recording 52 tackles, 14½ sacks and four forced fumbles. He is a key part of Romeo Crennel's defense, which ranked 14th in the league and helped the Chiefs win the AFC West and return to the playoffs.

"Tamba is a key contributor to our football team, and we have a tremendous amount of respect for him both personally and professionally," Chiefs GM Scott Pioli said in a statement. "We want Tamba to remain a member of the Chiefs, and we will continue to work together with the hope of reaching a long-term agreement."

The way we see it

As Pioli said, the Chiefs would like to sign Hali to a long-term deal, but for now, the franchise tag will suffice. This move was expected, as there was no way the team was going to let him reach free agency. Hali led the AFC in sacks a year ago and has the skills to be a force for many years to come.
