The Ravens have placed the franchise tag on DT Haloti Ngata, the team announced on Tuesday.
"Signing the two-time Pro Bowler long-term has been a top priority," the team said on its Twitter account.
Assuming the franchise tag exists under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, Ngata could make $12.5 million in 2011.
Ngata recorded a career-high 5½ sacks in 2010, his fifth season in the league. He added five passes defensed and helped anchor the Ravens' fifth-ranked rushing defense.
The way we see it
Similar to other franchise tags handed out on Tuesday, the Ravens want to make sure they have the rights to Ngata when a new CBA is in place. Also like the other tagged players, the decision by the Ravens comes as no surprise. He is a big reason for their stout run defense.
